Today we visited a Japanese Herbal Medicine Shop. Patients come here to receive ancient medicines. The process of making these herbal medicines is called Kanpo. This shop has been around for 150 years. The pharmacist is the 5th generation of his family to own this pharmacy.
We made a mixture called, Hochuekkito, it is composed of 10 different herbs. This medicine is used to promote good health and increase energy.
First, we weighed out the 10 herbs. The herbs in this formula include astragalus root, ginseng root, Atractylodes lancea rhizome, Japanese angelica root, bupleurum root, jujube fruit, citrus unshiu peel, glycyrrhiza root (licorice), cimicifuga rhizome, and ginger rhizome.
Then, we add them to the dividing machine. We made 10 days worth of medications.
This machine puts the herbs into individual packages.
You add the herbs to 300 mls of water and boil for 40 minutes. The patient should drink this once a day.
Then we went to the stock room to see some of the unusual "herbs"
Dried bees, Dried earthworm, Dried seahorse, Dried frogs... just to name a few.
Then 40 minutes later....
I won't say it taste good... But I'm still alive!! Haha. Chat Later.
